Imaginary Worlds

This is list of noble experiments at creating real Utopian societies. You have probably never heard of these short-lived countries, but they did exist. Some were more successful than others.

  • Amikejo - The World's Only Esperanto Country

  • According to http://strangemaps.wordpress.com, Amikejo was founded in 1830 by a group of Esperantists living in a neutral zone between Belgium and Germany called Neutral-Moresnet. This pie shaped enclave was created after the defeat of Napoleon and existed as a recognized poilitical unit from 1816 to 1919. 1908, the local population held a demonstration advocating the creation of an Esperanto Free State to be called ‘Amikejo’ (Esperanto for ‘Place of Friendship’). The local band played the national anthem for Amikejo.

Unfortunately, the state of Amikejo never gained formal recognition (though it issued stamps and postcards) and it was utterly destroyed by World War 1 when its tiny territory was overrun by the German Empire. When the war ended, the Treaty of Versailles awarded the territory to Belgium. Rest in Peace tiny Amikejo.
